Water System Engineering

A prerequisite for community health is an adequate supply of safe, potable drinking water.  Chastain-Skillman (CS) has designed hundreds of water systems with over one thousand miles of distribution system piping.  Water treatment systems have varied from small subdivision systems to complex high purity deionized water systems.  CS has experience with almost every type of design and construction situation to be encountered in Florida.

Potable Water Supply Treatment & Pumping

CS have worked with several cities regarding their role in Regional Water Supply Plans, and the impact that the plan will have on availability of future additional water resources.  This has led directly to work we have performed on the Public Water Supply Plans for these cities, preparing documents which are consistent with the Regional Water Supply Plan.  The extension of the planning is the water use permitting.  CS routinely prepares water use permits for expansions and renewals.  We have designed dozens of water systems during our history with over a thousand miles of distribution system piping.  Water treatment systems have varied from small systems with disinfection only to complex high purity deionized water systems.

Wastewater System Engineering

One of the primary factors of public health is the manner in which domestic wastewater is treated and disposed.  The efficient collection, treatment, and disposal of domestic wastewater, are a primary obligation of municipal and county governments.  CS engineers have over 50 years of experience in water and wastewater planning, treatment, and linear infrastructure planning design, permitting and construction.

Wastewater Treatment Facilities

CS has significant wastewater facility engineering experience, as a large portion of our work is associated with the design of new wastewater treatment plants and pump stations, as well as retrofits of existing facilities.  Much of this type of design involves control systems used to pace blowers, pumps, chemical feed systems, and ultraviolet disinfection systems.  CS has designed a number of innovative approaches to wastewater engineering, developing a national reputation for our wastewater treatment design expertise, while saving our clients’ money.   CS has evaluated, upgraded, and re-rated treatment facilities in Lakeland, Auburndale, Winter Haven, Jacksonville (JEA) and Kissimmee (Toho Water Authority).

Linear Infrastructure

CS has significant, relevant experience with all facets of pipeline and pump station design and construction.  Our activities include route analysis, survey, hydraulic and transient analysis, environmental permitting, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, and construction plan and technical specification preparation.  CS has designed over 750,000 feet of water, reclaimed water and wastewater transmission mains in Central Florida.  Projects performed by CS have included construction conditions that have varied from highly developed excavation with shoring, jacking and boring, horizontal directional drilling, micro-tunneling, and supporting above-ground pipes.  The wide range of soil and groundwater conditions has required the use of such procedures as dewatering fro construction and pipe laying, piling foundations to prevent settlement, and weighting of pipes to prevent flotation in subaqueous crossings.

Municipal Clients

We have provided water and wastewater continuing services to numerous municipalities within Central Florida, including Auburndale, Bartow, Frostproof, Lakeland, Wauchula, Winter Haven and Polk County.  These municipalities have remained valued clients for decades.
