Following are brief descriptions of some projects that Chastain-Skillman's Architecture professionals have completed. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but should give you an idea of the scope of work that we have done.

Crooked Lake Prairie (2005)
Bartow, Florida

In 2004, Chastain-Skillman began design of an elevated boardwalk crossing an extensive wetland area located at the Crooked Lake Prairie Environmental Lands Site.  Construction of the boardwalk was completed in June of 2005.  The boardwalk is 336 feet long by 6 ft. wide and contains a 15 ft. x 15 ft. permanent seating platform at its center.  This seating provides comfortable observation of the lake, the wetlands and associated plant and animal species.  Additionally, the boardwalk was constructed to be ADA accessible.

A significant issue surrounding this project was the environmental permitting.  Chastain-Skillman and the Polk County Natural Resource Department spent significant effort addressing the concerns of the Southwest Florida Water Management District regarding impacts to the wetlands from shading.  Permits for the project were ultimately granted and the project was successfully constructed.
First United Methodist Church (2003)
Sebring, Florida

First United Methodist Church has served the Sebring area since 1912 and as the community has grown the church has expanded to keep pace. Having outgrown their fellowship hall and looking to provide new ministries in the future, the church selected Chastain-Skillman to design a new multi-purpose Family Life Center. The two-story, 19,000 square foot facility includes youth classrooms and activity space in addition to a multi-purpose auditorium, commercial kitchen, and separate smaller dining area. The multi-purpose room functions for large dining activities, as well as contemporary worship and other activities requiring a stage area. While using an economical steel structure the design of the new building complements the masonry “Spanish Mission” style of the existing church buildings.
Hardee County Courthouse Renovation (2002)
Wauchula, Florida

Chastain-Skillman assisted Hardee County in obtaining a grant from the State of Florida to begin renovations to the historic Hardee County Courthouse. This first phase of the renovations, for which Chastain-Skillman also provided design services, included restoration of exterior historic architectural elements and renovation of the third floor historic courtrooms and associated spaces. The project also included reconstruction of a service stairway and installation of a fire alarm system to improve life safety as well as reconstruction of restroom facilities to provide for handicapped accessibility.
Leesburg Wastewater Treatment Plant (2000)
Leesburg, Florida

With the existing treatment facility nearing 100% capacity, the City was in need of new treatment capacity in as timely a manner as possible. Chastain-Skillman was retained to design a new 3.0 MGD plant, to be located at the site of the City’s existing sprayfield near the Florida Turnpike. Bids were received and were under budget. Completed in November 2000, this is the fourth Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) facility designed by Chastain-Skillman in Florida. A unique project characteristic was the extra attention paid to the potential archeological value of the construction site, as numerous American Indian artifacts have been discovered in and around the area.
Union Congragational Church
Avon Park, Florida

Union Congregational Church was founded in 1890 in Avon Park. Worship is still held in the original sanctuary which has been expanded and remodeled numerous times. Chastain-Skillman has designed the last three modifications for the church: two of which involved expansion of the seating area and the last consisting of a complete remodeling of the choir and chancel area. In each case the design had to respect not only the historic character of the building but also the structural integrity of the original framing system.
Wells Motor Company (1998)
Avon Park, Florida

When Wells Motor Company made the decision to move from the downtown location where their business began back in 1931, they chose Chastain-Skillman to design their new dealership. The new building has approximately 26,000 square feet under roof, including indoor and outdoor showrooms of 2,700 square feet each. The building also has a large mezzanine area for parts storage and sixteen service bays. As an added convenience the customer lounge area includes a brightly decorated play room for children.
Sumica Natural Area
Lake Wales, Florida

Sometimes Structural Engineering isn't all about steel and concrete. SUMICA Natural Area is an environmental land management site. As a sub-consultant on this project, Chastain-Skillman provided surveying, structural design and permitting services for this project. The design included covered picnic areas as well as a short catwalk and nature viewing shelter. Made up of 4,031 acres, this environmental preserve showcases diverse native habitats, unique and rare wildlife and plants, numerous wetlands, and lake shoreline.
Highlands County Jail (1993)
Sebring, Florida

The Highlands County Jail had been experiencing problems with a leaking roof for many years. Chastain-Skillman was asked to develop a solution to the problem that would not require the existing roof-mounted air conditioning system to be disturbed. To accomplish this, Chastain-Skillman designed a light-gauge steel truss and metal roof system to cover the entire roof area of approximately 5,200 square feet. The project also included the remodeling of the public entrance of the Sheriff’s Office to increase both security and handicapped accessibility as well as extensive asbestos abatement.
