Chastain-Skillman (CS) professionals provided survey and engineering design services for the construction of an upgrade of the Glendale Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lakeland. The new facility is designed to allow the production of Class A residuals for improved disposal options. CS evaluated alternatives and recommended a two-phase anaerobic digestion process combining a new egg-shaped digester operating in the mesophilic temperature range. To accommodate the batch operation needed to meet the Class A requirements, the system includes a feed sequencing tank.
The existing digesters were retrofitted with new mixing and heating systems, including a new boiler sized to heat the ESD to thermophilic temperatures and maintain the temperature in the mesophilic digesters throughout the process.
The construction of the new facility required close coordination between the City’s plant operations staff and the contractor to assure continuous production of digested biosolids.
